Since a great many of you had strong opinions regarding the speed limit on
Hiawatha, I'm expecting you will be equally interested in the fact that Cub
is proposing to grace us with one of their stores on 46th Street between
Hiawatha and Minnehaha.

The Longfellow neighborhood met last night to hear about this idea (rather,
I think, to just say no--I don't think anyone especially wanted to hear
about it, although we did hear about it). I'm guessing between 200-300
folks were wanting to say no--the room was packed and overflowing. (Would I
be misstating things to say there were none--okay, giving the benefit of the
doubt, 1-2--who were willing to entertain the idea?) I concluded all my
neighbors there thought this was a very bad idea, for ever so many reasons.
I think so, too.

This Cub Store would be in the block kitty-corner to Minnehaha Park. I'm
wondering how these developers and corporations make it this far--to
actually be conducting many "market surveys," hiring urban planners,
architects, drawing up plans--and then presenting us with their grand ideas.
Could someone out there enlighten me? What is the process they must follow
to do this? And how can we best change their minds? On the other hand--do
any of you think this would be a dandy idea?

I'd love to hear some feedback if you're inclined. Thanks.

Nancy Russell
