On June 12,2000 Barbara Schneider was experiencing a mental health crisis. When police, ill-equipped to handle a mental health crisis, were called by a neighbor, six officers appeared on the scene.
They broke down her front door after filling her living room with CS gas. By this time Barbara had retreated to what she thought was the safety of her bedroom. When the police kicked in her bedroom door, they confronted a terrified woman in the midst of a mental health crisis crouched against the back wall clutching a kitchen knife. When she moved toward the police with the knife in her hand after being told to "drop the knife" she was shot nine times in the chest, arm and head.
