We've seen a lot of doom and gloom postings as of late. I'm just as guilty of that as anyone.
However, I think it is important that we not get so focused on all the bad stuff going on that we ignore all the good stuff happening around us. For example, two weeks ago, the north and northeast areas of our city was host to the 10th annual Mississippi Corridor Neighborhood Coalition river cleanup, which took place at ten different locations along the banks and included some 60 different sponsors and donors and dozens, if not hundreds, of volunteers. If that's not enough, also taking place that weekend was the Art-A-Whirl festival, featuring some 200 local artists at locations all over northeast Minneapolis. And part of that festival was the fifth annual Eastside Food Coop spring plant sale in the parking lot of their new location at 26th and Central Aves (opening fall 2003). And there's lots more to look forward to: On Friday, May 30th from 5-9pm is the Windom Park Community Carnival, to be held (appropriately) at Windom Park on Johnson St. and Lowry Ave. NE. This family-oriented event will feature games for kids, a petting zoo, information about neighborhood activities, lots of food and great opportunities to interact with neighbors. On Saturday, May 31st from 1-6pm is the grand opening of the new Pierre Bottineau Library at Broadway Ave. and Marshall St. NE. More information on the new library and the grand opening celebration is available at http://www.mplib.org/new_bottineau.asp On Thursday, June 5th at 7pm, the Twin Cities River Rats Waterski Show Team will kick off a new summer season at the show site on Broadway Ave. and West River Road. All shows are free and concessions are available. Bring a couple lawn chairs and a picnic blanket and get ready to be awed by amazing waterski stunts and laugh until your sides split at this year's show theme, "Rattyshack" - a humorous parody of the classic golf film "Caddyshack" that we all know and love. The Insight News is advertising the Northeast Jam music and arts festival on Saturday, June 7th at the East Side Neighborhood Services building (1700 Second St NE). There will be a streetball tournament, health and job fair and a "School's Out" celebration sponsored by Radio Disney. The event starts at 8am and goes all day long. Also on June 7th will be the opening of the 4th season of the Northeast Farmer's Market in the parking lot of St. Boniface Church, on University and 7th Avenues NE, across from Emily's Lebanese Deli. The market opens at 9am and goes until 1pm and will take place weekly through October. More details available at: http://www.eastsidefoodcoop.org/farmersmarket.htm Plus, on Tuesday, June 24th at 6:45pm will be the 74th annual Celebrate! Northeast Parade on Central Ave. The parade starts at 28th Ave and runs south along Central to 14th Ave. This year's Grand Marshall is Majdi Wadi, owner of Holy Land Deli and Bakery. More information on the parade is available at http://www.nemplschamber.org/parade.htm And that's just stuff coming up in my neck of the woods during the next month. What other events are going on in our city that people should know about? Mark Snyder Windom Park TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. Don't feed the troll! Ignore obvious flame-bait. 2. If you don't like what's being discussed here, don't complain - change the subject (Mpls-specific, of course.) ________________________________ Minneapolis Issues Forum - A City-focused Civic Discussion - Mn E-Democracy Post messages to: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subscribe, Unsubscribe, Digest, and more: http://e-democracy.org/mpls
