Southside housing agency shuts down amid audit issues

A key nonprofit housing group serving
10 south Minneapolis neighborhoods has
decided to go out of business after
getting its second critical state audit
in three years.

Southside Neighborhood Housing Services
has built, repaired and financed housing
for people with low and moderate incomes
in some of the South Side's most-challenged
areas. Its board decided last week to end
the 27-year-old agency as it faced another
liquidity crisis and potential demands for
repayment of some audited funds.

Its North Side sister agency is taking
steps to expand operations citywide.
Late last year, Northside Neighborhood
Housing Services had negotiated an agreement
to take over Southside's assets but didn't
sign the accord after a city official
suggested it wait for the audit.
