This proposal has already been approved by the PS&RS committee of the City Council. It was forwarded to the Ways and Means/Budget committee which meets tomorrow afternoon.
Just to get the right amount of paranoia going here -- while most people have been talking about the invasiveness of "recording" what the cameras see on the streets. How would you feel if you knew that not only you were recorded, but that computer systems were analyzing all the video footage in an effort to match up people on the street with a database of "interesting persons" that law enforcement (or maybe Target?) wants to track down, keep an eye on, whatever?
Don't laugh. I know of two different such technologies being developed, and they definitely can pick out specific people from video image most of the time.
What's Target's real reason for wanting this?
