Two questions occur to me when I contemplate the discussion on real estate subsidies: 1) Is it not inflammatory to talk about "educating the writer"? 2) How can we talk about "lying to get a subsidy" until we determine for sure what the truth is; and at what point are we sure what the truth is when we mostly have an allegation by developers who only get to pay the tax bill while reaping none of the profits?
We know that list rules disqualify "you are a liar" as legitimate discussion. Yet, if we accept "lying to get a subsidy", then we are saying that "you are a liar" is acceptable when applied to a party that is absent. It seems some other formulation would be necessary, such as a prosecutor might use that "the facts on record seem inconsistent with what party X has publicy claimed". That doesn't assert that party X is lying so much as pointing out an apparent discrepancy. Video Monitors: Strikes me as plain STUPID to sit watching monitors HOPING to catch a crime as it happens. NOT so stupid to have monitors taking pictures to help catch and CONVICT a criminal who does something in the area being monitored. Not saying I like anything about the idea, but it does strike me that the cameras are as valid for the purpose as all the cameras in buses and convenience store. In fact, I suggested sometime back that CITIZENS shoot footage of motorists violating laws at intersections to prove to police it isn't their imagination. And, of course, we know about the video cameras now being put in cops cars. ------------- Jim Mork Cooper Neighborhood Longfellow Community Wonderful, Thriving Minneapolis, My Home Town __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
