Ok, I hate getting junk mail and getting tracked as
well, so I tend to avoid registering for a lot and
often use sites like anonymizer.com to surf
anonymously.

But first of all, less scrupulous web managers can get
a LOT of the info from the registration without asking
you for anything, especially if they start using
things like "web bugs".

And secondly, a newspaper has no obligation to offer
you up to date online content for free. Their
reporters and editors do have to get paid somehow, and
that can either be by subscription fee or by
advertising.

Of course, since most commercial newspapers make at
least a good portion of their money from advertisers,
being tracked is of much less concern to me than where
their priorities lie. If I'm paying nothing (or next
to it) and the advertisers are paying the bills, what
becomes more important to their business - the truth
or advertiser's interests?

But anyway, based on what they said, if you want to be
private but still get free news from the strib, either
register with a "junk" email address while using some
sort of anonymizer or play around with disabling
cookies and javascript.
