Vicky replies: You are wrong: My income is less than $75,000 per year. Your fantasy does illustrate a gap in financial knowledge. Who is "richer"? The person who lives in a $200,000 house with NO mortgage? Or the person who lives in a $1 million house with a $950,000 mortgage? Assume their incomes are identical - which one has a lot of discretionary money to spend? The amount that one OWES is a function of individual decisions - wise or unwise. Only people (and cities) without debt know the true joy of financial freedom. Why is that when the piano needs to be moved, most people offer to carry the sheet music.
