Just to respond briefly to the post about school achievement and the dearth of MPS national merit scholarship recipients --

The Minneapolis Public Schools usually have many national merit scholars each year, particularly from Southwest and South High Schools, but usually spread all around the system to some extent. The Star Tribune link in the last post only features students who have won *scholarships* from National Merit. This group of students is much smaller, but not more exclusive, than the larger pool of National Merit Scholars.

Some National Merit Scholars win scholarships from National Merit/ETS itself. Other National Merit Scholars win scholarships from corporations. Others yet win scholarships from colleges and universities.

MPS students additionally often are designated National Achievement Scholars, a special National Merit category for students of color. Some students are National Merit Commended Scholars, one step down from being a full-fledged National Merit Scholar.

Overall, this makes for a more complicated, and nuanced, picture of National Merit.
