Hello all,

Calhoun Square is in the news today for its dilemma on the gun-sign posting
question. It is impossible to be neutral on the issue because not posting a
sign means guns are welcome on the premises. Here is the link:

Calhoun Square is hearing from people who want the posting of no-gun signs.
I have been encouraging businesses to post signs - including Calhoun Square.

Just to give some background on the law, major business groups vehemently
opposed the shall-issue gun law from the start of the legislative session
this year (as did law enforcement). The bill originally contained
requirements that any business disallowing guns provide secure storage
lockers for people's guns AND be liable for the loss of the gun and the
safety the customer while in the store. It also originally required gigantic
signs and specified that they be lime green. The requirement that signs be
posted AND people be personally notified was placed in the law intentionally
to make it extremely difficult for businesses to ban guns.

The supporters of the bill were able to neutralize some of the most vehement
business opposition by dropping the locker and outlandish sign requirements.
They in effect agreed to allow businesses to exercise some of their property
rights in exchange for one business group dropping its most fierce
resistance. Some of those same supporters are now going to businesses and
telling them they won't shop there if they post signs. That is having your
cake and eating it too.

For years I have gone out of my way to shop at city destinations to support
Minneapolis. I now plan to support businesses that post signs as much as I
can, wherever they are. One of my new destinations for that reason is the
Mall of America.

If anyone needs the phone number for the Calhoun Square manager or for
Target, for that matter, email me. I have them.

1. Don't feed the troll! Ignore obvious flame-bait.
2. If you don't like what's being discussed here, don't complain - change the subject
(Mpls-specific, of course.)
