Steve and the forum
There is a program at two local Community Colleges that offer a certificate program in housing inspection.
It involves 6 classes and is 11 credits.

I just graduated from that program at North Hennepin Community College.
It was very informative training, and I THINK it gave me the basic information I would need to be a housing inspector.  I am sure there is more to be learned on the job though.   The class work is not daunting by any means, and can probably be completed in a year going three nights a week.

After all that class work, I am totally convinced that its not the kind of work I want to do.  Low pay, difficult working conditions (most people don't want you on their property if they have something to hide), and the politics involved would boggle the mind.

If anyone has further questions about the program, contact North Hennepin, or me (off list).

Who is doing the "intense training"?  More importantly, what are they being trained to do?
It took me 2 to 3 years at 40+ hours per week of actual working for a contractor and then as a contractor to learn how to really understand all of the codes and where they apply.
