WM: This is dalmatian defecation and you know it. What I believe about cops is neither here no there. It was you who opined that cops would demand tricks of prostitutes. Growing up, the cops (another town, another time) gave my dad a ride home on Fridays, that's when he paid them off for not arresting him through the week. Whatever my white privilege affords me--and it's damn little--it doesn't make me blind.Peter: If you want to believe that every cop out there is a law abiding citizen, Wizard, go ahead, that's your privilege, a privilege that white Americans can easier afford.

Olive Church's committee and I sat down with Hennepin Co. judges to talk about prostitution. I can no longer remember who was there and I'm not sure they gave their names to begin with. However, anyone can look through the records and get a clear picture of what happens to johns and pimps and understand pretty clearly that some judges are letting them slide.
judges are in the habit of prosecuting prostitutes while letting their
johns and pimps off the hook, you have an obligation to identify these
judges.
Peter: Sending themWM: What happens with adult prostitutes is that they wind up participating in their own victimization. I don't believe that just because they are victims gives them leave to further victimize themselves or others in the public streets. Last summer a prostitute stood on the corner of Lake and Oakland and mooned lake St. for some reason. She was whacked to the skies on something at the time and jittering around on the corner between tricks. Three or four weeks ago a prostitute set herself up along my fence. She had her coat over the fence, her soda on the fence, she was facing the East bound traffic and playing with herself for all to see, including potential customers. Am I supposed to put up with this jazz just because this woman is victimized by prostitution? I don't think so. I shouldn't have to gather in the condoms left decorating my shrubbery either. Or the loud fights the hookers get into. Or the filthy hookers wandering around in a drugged stupor with foul mouths and breaking into cars to steal or to sleep it off or to vomit, urinate, defecate or change their tampons.
to prison will only add to their history of victimization.
Furthermore,WM: Yes, reality is shocking. Street prostitutes are hardened criminals. These women are as rough as a stucco bathtub. They carry knives and razor blades and are not the least bit shy about using them. They're hopped on drugs and alcohol and a heroin mummy is a dangerous person, make no mistake.
any man or a woman who has done nothing more than accept money for sex
should NEVER be locked up with hardened criminals. As far as prostitutes
in prison benefiting from a rest and good food, I continue to find that
perspective not only naive, but shocking.
Bulldog, who generally robs her tricks, has been out on the corner after the johns retaliated by beating her nearly to death on several occasions, breaking her leg, and shooting her once. You bet I call the cops and the consequences are that the women wind up in prison. There used to be a mother and daughter team who worked 24th and Nicollet, half a block from the Fifth Precinct. When the cops were on them, they'd jump on my bus (17) and ride as far as Lyndale to duck the cops. Two generations! Makes me sick.
Street prostitution is not Pretty Woman. Street prostitution is mean and dirty and nasty. These women cannot be glorified as "sex workers." These women would cut your throat in a heartbeat and some of them have been out here 20 years and more, walking past my house--taking shelter in it when it was Harriet Tubman--defecating in my recycle box, flinging their used condoms around, dragging mattresses in behind my trash bins and setting up business on my property. They do the crime, they do the time. Taking the position that turning them in is somehow about hypocritical churchiness (what else) is a knee jerk reaction from someone who is not living with prostitution.
However, your reaction is of a piece with those other reactions that keep prostitution going. Your way keeps children growing up in that atmosphere, it gets Cici, the sweet but dumb kid down the block propositioned every time she goes up to the corner with her little girl friends, has the woman down the street walking stiff as board in fear, has just forced a neighbor off the block because she can't be outside her house without hearing the cat calls from johns and drug dealers out here intimidating the populace.
WM: How very pprivileged white male of you.Wizard, when you first expressed your opinion about prostitution on this post I thought you were speaking from a compassionate, albeit misguided, position. And now I'll be the gentleman and allow you the last word on this exchange.
