We used to have fireworks right here in the Northside. We headed over to North Commons and watched the shows in awe. More recently Camden's Steamboat days put on a fine show. But that was before criminals took over the Northside. So we now have to watch the better neighborhood's fireworks. The tower hill in Farview Park was a fine spot until the gangs took it over. A couple years ago we took it back with whole families watching fireworks all around us. Last year a few brave souls watched from the hill again as a new crime wave overtook the Northside.

About sundown I took a look up the hill from the relative safety of 4th Street and saw it pretty much barren of fireworks fans. A few blocks further north the gangbangers had stolen some construction barricades and completely blocked off the street for their fireworks show. For those unfamiliar with who really runs the Northside, for the last few years the gangbangers have set off truckloads of fireworks around July 4th from the area of 4th Street and 29th Avenue North. This is the gang's little way of "giving something back to the community". The gangbangers seem to enjoy this little bit of "community service" too, and seem especially fascinated with fireworks combustion. Perhaps it's the similarity to the combustion of cocaine and it's derivitives that so amuses them, although the process of burning even the worst fireworks is probably more predictable. MPD, badly outnumbered and busy with other things generally tries to ignore these goings on. Last year MPD was ultimately forced to shut them down after a small girl was burned (these gangbangers are no more accurate with fireworks than they are with bullets) and firefighters were assualted during this little party.

My options thusly limited, I decided to head for the river and settle for watching just one fireworks display in relative safety. After observing a so-so display I headed home to defend my most humble abode. When you can't get home insurance at any price you take extreme measures- I had plenty of hose handy and charged to hopefully put out anything the gangbangers up the street might send my way. Fortunately the hose wasn't needed, thought the gangbangers were throwing fireworks right in front of my house and rumor has it they were tormenting a dog with same.

I awoke this morning to see my new neighbor receive the all too common welcome to the Northside, a busted out car window. MPD was just finishing the paperwork on that when they had to intervene in a domestic. Meanwhile, I exchanged dirty looks with a local pimp whilst attempting to mow the lawn, apparently I was scaring off his "girls" customers. BTW, one wonders what strange fetishes their "Johns" have... I've seen the neighborhood hookers wear the same clothes days on end. Who would have "sex" with a "woman" who hasn't bathed since the last rainstorm?

About now I hear the citizens of some of the city's wealthier neighborhoods snickering. These hookers don't bother with condoms, and you wealthy taxpayers get to pay for their AIDS treatment...

Having the last laugh as I head out of Hawthorne,
