[MH] NOTE BOARD MTGS-- WED., JULY 9th and WED., July 23rd ...2004 budget begins to take shape Because of the significant decrease in Local Government Aid from the state of Minnesota, the Library Board must adopt a budget for 2004 that makes substantial cuts in services. In order to do so, the Board studied three potential budget scenarios, each highlighting a different set of trade-offs. All scenarios assumed that the new Central Library would open as planned in 2006 with adequate staffing six days a week. After extensive community input (received online, in writing, and at public meetings), the Library Board directed staff to prepare a draft 2004 budget based on a composite of Scenarios A and C. On July 9 the Library Board Finance Committee will review the draft budget, which provides for some open hours at all libraries and preserves the technology and learning centers, but with reduced hours. The budget for programs such as bilingual outreach would be reduced, and outside funding would be sought for the Summer Reading Program and Homework Helper tutors. Staff reductions would be in the range of 77-80 full-time equivalents. The proposed budget for books and materials is $1.8 million, reduced from $2 million in 2003.Two more public hearings are scheduled before the Library Board is expected to approve the 2004 budget on July 23. ...@ Your Library Did you know...
