The new higher speed limits on Hiawatha Avenue go into effect today, according to this morning's Star Tribune (no link on website.)
Cars will be entering the Phillips and North Longfellow neighborhoods from the north at 50-60 miles per hour or more. The speed limit will slow to 40 mph at 26th Street -- but will the traffic? This effectively turns Hiawatha Avenue into a freeway, for bike/pedestrian purposes, making it even more difficult for the central Minneapolis neighborhoods to have access to the river area, and vice versa. There is already not enough green light on 32nd Street for a pedestrian to cross Hiawatha at anything slower than a trot, btw. It's a traffic death waiting to happen. They said they wouldn't do it, and they did. Stop the 35W expansion! -- Holle Brian Bancroft TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. Don't feed the troll! Ignore obvious flame-bait. 2.
