I should mention a store here -- one that I worked in part-time when I was a student in college, many years ago.

Schatzlein's Saddle Shop, on West Lake Street, has been there for a long, long time -- about 4 generations now. It was started by Jerry Schatzlein's father, and Jerry is pictured as a child (about age 4-5) on their shopping bags. Well, Jerry is now retired and spends the winters down south, the store is run by his children, and some of the grandchildren are starting to work there.

It is, I think, the only store left in either Minneapolis or St. Paul selling saddles, harnesses, and all the rest of the equestrian related equipment and clothing. All their competitors have gone out of business or moved out to the suburbs. Yet Schatzlein's continues to operate from Lake Street, a long ways away from any horse farm, and continues to do well.
