In past posts I've noticed the all to common presence of MPD traffic squads on the 394 Sane Lane, Hiawatha, and enforcing the 30 MPH speed limit on our long 4 lane bridges over the river. I know we need revenue, but with speeding on Hiawatha now decriminalized we need to redeploy our traffic squads to where the moving violations tend to be more felonious- the Northside.

A couple days ago one of the power poles at 26th and Washington was taken out by an incompetent driver. Friday night a hit and run driver bounced off a parked truck a few blocks away. Last night another incompetent who should never have been allowed behind the wheel of a pedal car took out the stoplight at the other corner of 26th and Washington. This is pretty typical Northside driving... Our Northside streets are terrorized by a happy go lucky type of driver that doesn't bother with formalities like licences, insurance, common sense, speed limits, sobriety, etc..

MPD's traffic squads have been strangely tolerent of this motoring mayhem. Hey, why come up to the Northside and deal with crackheads and drunks on wheels when the department can turn a profit fining decent citizens in speed traps or for trespassing in the Sane Lane? Besides, those folks will pay there fines, unlike the mobile deadbeats of the Northside. And why tow these deadbeats for lack of insurances, plates, etc.. when they'll never bail their clunkers out of the impound lot anyway? Better to keep our traffic squads on 394 and the Hennepin Avenue bridge making easy money... Ka-chink! Ka-chink!.

Our we could follow the example of the State Trooper who pulled over a Geo Metro in a bit too much of a hurry getting on I94 a while back. In it were 4 felons wanted on various and sundry warrants. Said felons had just shot up a fourplex on the Northside. All we got out of this deal was an old Geo Metro, probably was lucky to cover the tow bill when auctioned.

Beat out bad boyz Geo Metro: $200 or so.

Taking four felons off the Street: Priceless.

Of course in among the Metros and other beaters the impound lot takes a loss on is the occasional Corvette or Caddy full of drugs. Recently a thinly populated northwestern Minnesota district of the State Patrol announced that so far this year they'd seized and auctioned at a dandy profit over 40 vehicles for drugs. If they can do that kind of business up in the Red River valley imagine what we can do in the Northside! So MPD traffic squads, come on up to the Northside, and bring the wreckers with you!
