With the current conversation about Market Barbeque,
Ribfest, old Minneapolis, and the Big Box discussion
still going strong, the following observation came to
mind:

I would LOVE to see a Minneapolis locally-owned rib
restaurant, such as AJs Smokehouse or Amos and Amos
(if theyre still open), take first place at Ribfest.
Cant see the allure of rib franchises. The cuisine is
watered down to be palatable to the widest audience
possible.

Does anyone know how much it costs to enter Ribfest?
I wonder if the cost is prohibitive for many
independent restaurant owners. When a local restaurant
has a fire or some other catastrophe, it doesnt
always have the capital to reopen quicklyor at all.

When it comes to rib joints, old Minneapolis may be
as recent as five years ago. Two of my favorites were
Art Songs Wings and Ribs on Broadway near James, and
the sublime Ma Dears on Lyndale just south of Lowry.

If Ribfest entry fees and expenses are prohibitive for
local restaurant owners, perhaps a fundraiser could be
held so they could take their rightful place as the
makers of the best ribs in the Twin Cities.
