Just thought I'd pass this along to people losing their beloved Elms.
We have a Catalpa tree in our back yard that is about ten years old. It is now 25 ft.
tall and the
branches span about 20 ft. It provides a lot of shade, as well as beautiful flowers
every spring. The
fragrance is wonderful. If you're losing a tree on the street, it might not be the
best replacement, as
the flowers and seed pods can be messy and people may not want them dropping on their
cars. In your yard,
I think they are great. The U of M extension service has lots of information easily
accessible online
about any tree you might consider as a replacement.
I remember the elms of my childhood in St. Paul . It was like going through a looong
tunnel riding my
bike down the street. I was sad to see them go.
