While I am not old enough to remember Lake Sandy (neither did my dad who was
born in 1915), I do remember the area on the either side of St Anthony Blvd
between Central and the old Foley Plant catching fire during the dry spells
in the summer. The area is loaded with peat. Having some education in
geology, this would lead me to believe that Sandy Lake was perhaps better
named Swampy Lake, since peat is formed by the decomposition of organic
matter over millions of years. It sure used to keep the firemen busy. Once
started, the peat would burn for days. Guess that's why it's been used for
fuel for so many centuries.
