Here, on the cusp of Downtown, where three freeways and the brief
highway of Lyndale converge, are patches of Nature that just boggle the Mind.Loring,
with the new pond plantings is gaining bird species every year. Three Sparrows
aside from the awful House, three Finch, three Duck plus
Double-Crested-Cormorant, the usual Egrets, Herons, Orioles and even a
Yellow-Headed-Blackbird
this year. This plus the Warbler migration that flits through in greater numbers
every year.
On the other side of the Sculpture Garden I've been observing a pair of
Coopers Hawks for the last three years. They are very successful parents. This
is the first year they've only fledged one chick (their first nest blew down,
they had to start over). Other years, without the wind, they fledged two. Saw
Juvie fly for the first time the other day (my first time, can't warrant it
was his/hers but it had to be close). This is in a little patch of untouchable
land ( very boggy) bracketed by million dollar homes and the skyline of
business. There are deer, red foxes, groundhogs and winos. Ain't no more Urban
Wildlife than this!

The reason of course is the incredible layout of our Parks ( Annie, if
you want more P.R., ya gotta pay for it) There's a loop forged by the river
gorge and the chain of lakes. This creates an inviting path for wild life. It's
kinda like the 494/694 for birds, they can get in and out without ever being
here. If animals aren't migratory by nature, just lookin' for a home, they'll
stay if the environment comforts them. There are Coyotes and Cougars in the
Minnesota River Valley. The Cougars are too wild to ever enter the city proper but
Coyotes are becoming more frequent visitors (might have something to do with
the Acme Outlet store opening at the Mall).
