My, that's revealing.


It's 200 miles by road from Nashville (west central) to Memphis (southwest corner) or maybe 30 minutes by air. On the other hand, it's 900 miles by road from Minneapolis to Memphis, or a couple hours by air. Actually, since Carol Johnson is from Brownsville, which is between Nashville and Memphis (150 miles from Nashvile, 50 from Memphis), it's even somewhat more interesting that Ms. Johnson declined the Nashville job but told the Memphis board that "it's different now. West Tennessee tugs at my heartstrings. This is home."

Would you turn down a job that would put you 750 miles closer to where you really wanted to be, a job that came with a big pay raise? Maybe you would if you knew you were pursuing a job even closer to "home."

The rest of her quotes from the story sure sound like she was trying hard to get the job, rather than just answer questions factually.

I'd say, don't let the screen door hit you on the way out, Carol.
