Minneapolis council member demands changes after shooting of toddler

Minneapolis City Council Member
Don Samuels feels helpless and useless.

To energize his Third Ward's North
Side neighborhoods, which have been plagued
by shootings involving children in the last
week, he has started a three-day fast and vigil
in a tent at 26th and Knox Avs. N. in
the Jordan neighborhood.

Standing there Thursday and flanked by
community leaders and residents, he made
two demands: He wants assignment of five
police officers to patrol Jordan on foot 24
hours a day, and restoration of $3.8 million
in state funding for community corrections
in Hennepin County.

He said that if the patrols haven't been
instituted by Aug. 13, when he returns from a
trip to Jamaica, his fast will
continue.

His actions follow the shooting this week of
a 19-month-old girl in her home, a duplex in
the 2700 block of Girard Av. N. in Jordan.
Deasha Hazley remained in critical
condition Thursday after two surgeries,
Samuels said.
