Greg is right....cops, prosecutors and judges are not the solution to the
problem. However, they have to work together in order for the system to
work. I am afraid that many of our judges are not holding up their end of
the bargain. I hate determinate sentencing as I think there needs to be
allowances for the exceptions to the rule. However, when you have judges
who consistantly ignore the sentencing guidelines and go out of their way to
NOT give criminals, and I don't mean first time offenders, the punishment
that the has been deemed appropriate for their crime, then I think the
judges need to be held accountable. Unfortuneately, the system has been
rigged so that the accountability, i.e. elections as set up in our state's
constitution, has been nullified. I find it amazing that the public goes
bananas if a driver gets a light sentence for DWI, but says nothing when a
felon, convicted of possessing a gun, walks out of the courtroom and is told
turn himself in when it's time to go to jail. How stupid does the judge
think this guy is. I cannot help but think that the judge just doesn't
care. She knows he won't be around her home or family.
