Mary, can you send this to the EJ list?

Item 1:
EJ Committee members please be aware of the following report.

The City of Minneapolis, Hennepin County and the Minnesota Pollution
Control Agency (MPCA) are seeking the public's help in getting
information regarding
six 55-gallon barrels that were abandoned on a vacant lot just north of
the intersection of East 24th Street and 5th Avenue on the Northside.

The barrels contain paint and other hazardous wastes, similar to those
from a body shop. Body shop wastes commonly include carcinogenic and
toxic organic solvents, such as toluene, benzene and
methyl-ethel-ketone.

On July 29, Minneapolis Environmental Services received a tip from
neighbors who live near where the barrels were abandoned. They reported
seeing three men unload the barrels from a white, one-ton pickup truck
last Friday night. After the discovery, the barrels were made upright by
the Minneapolis Fire Department and cordoned off. The barrels have since
been removed by an environmental contractor hired by the MPCA. Dumping
of hazardous wastes is illegal, and poses a health threat to people who
live nearby. Anyone knowing more about the incident is asked to call
the
Minnesota Duty Officer at (651) 649-5451 or (800) 422-0791.

July 30, 2003.

TEMPORARY REMINDER: 1. Don't feed the troll! Ignore obvious flame-bait. 2. If you don't like what's being discussed here, don't complain - change the subject (Mpls-specific, of course.)
