'It's getting really scary' in Phillips neighborhood Jim Adams and David Chanen, Star Tribune Published August 13, 2003 After helping patrol their south Minneapolis neighborhood for more than a year, Brad and Carol Pass and other residents thought things were getting better in their corner of Phillips.
That's changed. Since Friday, three men, including a cabdriver, have been killed within blocks of where they live. "Three homicides, right here. It's getting really scary," said Carol Pass. She and her husband helped organize the Bloomington Avenue Citizens Patrol last year to fight drug dealing and prostitution. Since the death Friday of cabbie Mohamed Salah, two more men have been killed within six blocks of the park where he was shot. More than one-third of Minneapolis' 32 homicides this year have happened in Phillips or in a bordering neighborhood. A fourth man was shot in Phillips near Lake St. and Cedar Av. S. on July 31. The recent three homicides aren't related, said police Lt. Mike Carlson. On Monday night, Willie Wise, 34, of Brooklyn Center, was found shot once in the head near a sidewalk in the 2900 block of 17th Av. S. He was found about 9:45 p.m. and died soon after at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Less than six hours later, two people with baseball bats beat a man to death at E. 25th St. and 18th Av. S., witnesses told police. As the suspects fled on foot, police arrested a teenage suspect. Neither of this week's cases was random, and police gave no motives. Nobody has been arrested in Salah's death. Wise was on a police list of the top 10 criminal offenders in the Third Precinct, which includes Phillips. The identity of the man beaten Tuesday hadn't been released. At least 12 homicides have occurred in or near Phillips this year. Police statistics show only two there through Aug. 12 last year. But the city's homicide pace this year is well under its peak homicide years in the mid-1990s. http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/4038111.html Posted by Shawn Lewis, Field Neighborhood -- __________________________________________________________ Sign-up for your own personalized E-mail at Mail.com http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup CareerBuilder.com has over 400,000 jobs.
