Sabo Named 2002 NOISE Legislator of the Year Sabo Recognized for Noise Mitigation Work Surrounding MSP
Washington, D.C. -- Congressman Martin Olav Sabo (DFL-Mpls.) today was awarded the 2002 NOISE (National Organization to Insure a Sound-controlled Environment) Legislator of the Year award for his work to champion the rights of communities affected by airport noise. Sabo has provided millions of dollars in federal funding for noise insulation, including homes and schools near Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Sabo also earmarked $35 million for federal research into quieter aircraft technology. "Airport noise has immense negative effects on surrounding communities. I'm proud of my record on this serious issue. However, much work remains to be done. We must not lose sight of the toll noise takes on the quality of life of airport neighbors," said Sabo. "I'm happy to work with community residents, organizations like NOISE, and elected officials at all levels of government. Through our collective efforts, we will continue to make a difference on the noise impacts of airports." Dennis McGrann, Executive Director of NOISE, said, "Congressman Sabo has been the key leader in Congress in shaping national aviation noise policy on two fronts. He used his clout on the Appropriations Committee to secure $35 million to research how to make aircraft quieter. We are always going to have airports, and we are always going to have neighboring communities, so the ideal solution for everyone involved is to decrease the noise at the source. Also, at the request of his constituents, Congressman Sabo was instrumental in directing the FAA to take a serious look at low frequency noise, the rumbling, 'vibration' sensation that rattles your china but was not recognized by the FAA. Thanks to Congressman Sabo, we are going to have quieter aircraft and a better understanding of how to combat annoying low frequency noise." Jo Thorne, President of NOISE and Mayor Pro-Tem of Thornton, Colorado: "Local communities have always had a friend in Congress in Representative Sabo. And I know he has worked especially hard on the noise concerns of Minneapolis and Richfield, Minnesota. They have an ambitious noise mitigation program at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, and that is due in no small part to Representative Sabo's efforts. We can only hope that more Members of Congress will follow his lead and be more responsive to their constituents' aviation noise concerns." Sabo concluded, "Thank you for recognizing my work on behalf of Minnesotans, and all Americans, affected by airport noise. I'd also especially like to acknowledge Minneapolis City Council Members Sandy Colvin Roy and Scott Benson, and Dennis McGrann and Jo Thorne with NOISE for their hard work. Together we'll continue our fight to address airport noise." An affiliate of the National League of Cities, NOISE has served for over 30 years as America's oldest nation-wide, community-based association comprised of locally elected officials who are committed to reducing the impact of aviation noise on local communities.
