I'm scratching my head. Could they REALLY have solved this shooting this fast? Have they just grabbed two guys who deserve to be locked up and will be easy to convict? I guess time will tell. If they aren't the real killers, maybe the real ones will skulk off elsewhere, but maybe not. Killers aren't generally brilliant people, the movies to the contrary notwithstanding. I do see that the publicity on this horrid killing put some pressure on the Minneapolis government to produce some results. But, me, I always think it is IMPORTANT that the right people get locked up, as a preventive matter. Well, knock on wood this time. By the way, one question I have is WHY they free someone who is going to be locked up for illegal firearms possession. I think maybe I'll write my CM about that.

I also think that a big part of our problem is NOT the fault of the police and the courts so much as the system within which they try to work. When the courts are NOT places designed to find the truth, and when "justice" is perceived to be served when someone with lots of disposable wealth gets off by confusing a jury while an INNOCENT person pleads guilty to a lesser charge because their penury requires it, I'm wondering how those upset with the continuing crime EXPECT the system to deliver what they want. We have learned in recent years (primarily from trials in France) just how differently other countries pursue the same goals. Are we THAT certain our system really achieves the aim we are supporting it to achieve? You know, the Magna Carta was NOT handed down from God. And it is now some 800 years old. I suggest humanity hasn't stood still in the pursuit of knowledge in that time. So, someone tell me WHY we defend this as if it were divine revelation. And how OFTEN do we ask ourselves if we're trying to deal with modern problems using medieval tools? Look around. Are you that convinced you want your "peers" deciding your fate? Can people too dumb to get out of jury duty deliver the justice you want?

Radio System Change:
"Resistance to change
New technology and a change in the way they operate have never been easily accepted by the street workforce. They will need to be trained and it may take some time before all individuals are comfortable with the new system. Our experience has shown that no matter what we provide to the field we will have a small percentage that will always be unhappy with the radios performance and some of these individuals can be very vocal."

Indeed!

Teleserve:
I recall now that if you want a case number on something you think is a crime, you have to file a report with Teleserve. That gets you a case ID. If you just call the police, I'm not sure you get a case ID. Some of the calls mentioned here may have just been calls to 911. I'm not sure how you track that or know what happened.
