Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak appointed a citizen committee to advise him on the selection of the Minneapolis Chief of Police. The committee consists of people with diverse personal and professional backgrounds, including criminal justice policy, business and management, police-community relations, youth and education advocacy, and community crime-fighting (list attached). Mayor Rybak also announced that Minneapolis has contracted with the Oldani Group, a national executive search firm with a record of recruiting women and candidates of color, to manage the search.
Rybak outlined the criteria he will use in selecting a new Chief of Police. These criteria include: * Maintaining Public Safety. The number-one job of the Chief and every police officer is to keep Minneapolis safe. * Strong Leader. The Chief must hold officers accountable, reward exceptional performers and delivering immediate consequences for unacceptable behavior. * Strong Manager. The $100 million police budget needs innovative, efficient management with measurable outcomes. * Demand respectful, consistent service in all communities. This includes aggressively diversifying the department. * Visible leader who builds partnerships with the community. The Chief and the force he commands should empower all members of the community who want to continue to build a safer city. Citizens who want to comment on these criteria can send comments to [EMAIL PROTECTED], go to the City's website at www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us, or submit comments directly to The Oldani Group by mail at 10900 NE 4th St., Room 2030, Bellevue, WA 98004. Mayor Rybak will nominate his candidate to the Executive Committee. From there, the nomination will go to the Public Safety and Regulatory Services Committee and then to the City Council. The new Police Chief's term is scheduled to begin in January of 2004. Citizen Advisory Committee Minneapolis Police Chief Selection This committee will assist the Mayor in evaluating the qualifications of the candidates for Chief of Police. There may be one or two additional committee members to add to the list, when we are able to confirm their participation.
