Racial Bias
I've mentioned this before in online discussions, but I'll bring it up again. The Ann Dunlap murder, to my knowledge, remains unsolved. And that goes along with hundreds of other murders that remain on the uncleared list at MPD. I think the murders in which nonwhites get arrested and charged are more likely to be the ones that occur out in the open with known circumstances that easily lead to a suspect. But there are a large number of others where the trail goes cold. Either the body is NOT left where the murder occurs, so we don't even know if it is in our jurisdiction. Or it is like the Ann Dunlap case, the suspects and the crime itself occur in the MPD jurisdiction, but it is deniable and the police get no input from the citizenry. There were circumstances surrounding the Dunlap crime that strongly suggested motive, but everything was circumstantial. I'd like to think that MPD goes after all crimes with the same energy and dedication, but that would only take the investigators so far. People who get rich are often smart and privileged enough to cover their tracks. And with a somewhat overworked police force, even if they don't CLOSE the case, it gets harder and harder to investigate. I'm always curious just how hard the Dunlap family pushed for an answer. They should have been able to get their phone calls answered pretty high in the city. But the news stories never convinced me they were using all their influence. Maybe that was just poor coverage of the story. The final feature of this is that the white population, curiously, doesn't feel threatened by a murder like this. They assume it was some upper-class spat that doesn't really affect anyone else. I seem to be the only person who never forgets this crime occurred. And that is probably cuz I HATE the idea of some privileged murderer "getting away with it".

Hawks Over The City
Today's Star Trib has an article on hawk migration:
http://www.startribune.com/stories/1453/4061025.html

Turns out that paved areas are pretty friendly to hawks. To migrate, they need updrafts, and pavement helps provide those. So, the thing that the city might have done to attract them is PAVE! Aint that a nice paradox, Jim?

Candidate Info
I think the libraries could be a place where candidate info could be available. It could be posted online, and then it could be printed out so that people can pick it up rather than wait for a turn at the few workstations provided at the library. There's no reason that the Star Tribune effort should be all there is. And maybe the candidates could get together to agree on a format. They are somewhat at the mercy of whatever Star Tribune editors decide is a good format. I think a better format would be five major issues with a single paragraph answer. What the paper tends to do is pull out a single issue and ask for an answer on that. That isn't quite satisfactory nowadays, but it does reflect the fact that a business like the Star Tribune has to ride herd on costs every moment.

Culture in School
I think the culture in school should be the one we share. Part of growing up is the adaptation to that culture. And success in life will be, in part, a result of success at that. Just so long as we don't make it a stealth program of indoctrinating people in "white values".
