Well, Jim Mork is right and M. G. Stinnett is
wrong when it comes to what happened to school
funding in the 2003 legislative session.

Jim Mork wrote:

"Because of Pawlenty and Sviggum, you no
longer have the financial equality to pull in
teachers with better pay."

and M. G. Stinnett wrote:

"Hm. Last I heard, state funding for K-12
education wasn't really cut. They were pretty
much protected in the budget, which meant much
bigger cuts for other programs. So you can't
blame Pawlenty and Sviggum."

Don sez:

What M. G. is doing here is just quoting the
party line from Pawlenty, Sviggum and the other
Republicans at the Capitol. The fact is that
K-12 education WAS cut substantially, and that
hurts Minneapolis greatly because the city has
great needs (this has been well documented by
other list members who have posted at length).

My boss, Senator Ellen Anderson, was on the
conference committee for K-12 education this
year, and I can assure you that she and her
Senate DFL colleagues were extremely displeased
with the House and Gov. Pawlenty on this; these
Republicans insisted on inadequate education
funding, and the Senate DFL being only one out
of three could not prevail on its proposal to
hold K-12 education harmless. The final result
was something like $170 million below the Senate
K-12 bill.
