The law of supply and demand isn't making any special demands on Minneapolis. Several other states and cities have experienced it. The only concern is when energy vendors play GAMES with supply and demand. That was one of Enron's business tactics. If markets are fair, consumers simply have to make rational decisions within them. Gas is seen as a "clean" fuel, so a desire for less polluted air makes it a "go-to" energy source. But that's something of an illusion. Any combustion in the best-case scenario produces carbon dioxide. So using more (while going forward with deforestation) is to plunge onward on a collision course with severe consequences. Thousands died from heat this year. More will die in the future. What we need is to do LESS combustion and more of alternative things. In short, to worry about gas prices is to worry about the wrong thing. If they double or triple, it might just HELP wean us of combustion. Maybe we should desire closing of some of these plants rather than conversion.
Discount Bread
Emilie Quast talks of the "discount bread store" in the old Country Club building in the 2500 block of Central. Well, it USED to sell "discount bread". But last time I was in there, it didn't look like there was a discount anymore. Maybe that's why the guy looks lonely. And since we're talking Northeast, what happened to the Apache 6 Theater. The marquee just says "Thank You". Looks pretty final.
Enforcement
Ann McCandless made the same point I've been making. If we can't shell out for enforcement of an ordinance, we ought to just get it off the books. An ordinance pre-empts other action, but without the resources, then NO action happens.
