Hi Folks,

I am not posting this necessarily as an endorsement of this statement, which came to me via another list. I am extremely curious about this, however. Anybody know something about the arrest of Bryce Williams?

URGENT ALERT
September 30, 2003
**********************************************

CUAPB BOARD MEMBER BRYCE WILLIAMS REMAINS BEHIND BARS--YOUR HELP IS URGENTLY
NEEDED!
We wrote yesterday to ask for your assistance with the arrest of Bryce
Williams, a CUAPB board member and commissioner for the African American
Men's Project, who was arrested at his home in the wee hours of yesterday
(Monday) morning. While all of the circumstances of the arrest are not
clear, there are even more indications that this arrest is a set up, to
interfere with Bryce's important work with the community. Bryce is being
held on "probable cause for assault" but has not been charged.

Lawyers were able to see Bryce yesterday. What they learned is that Bryce
has been transferred repeatedly to different cells in the jail. Anyone who
has spent time in jail knows that moving inmates around is a security
nightmare for the staff, so this is pretty unusual. Each time he has landed
in a new cell, someone there was eager (even insistent) to try to get Bryce
to talk about his case. This is of great concern, as many innocent people
have been taken down as a result of testimony from jailhouse snitches.
Luckily, Bryce knows the drill and he knows how to take care of himself in
jail.

Also of concern is that the shooting at the Hennepin County Government
Center yesterday will be used as an excuse to hold Bryce longer than 36
hours. Already the jail staff are making this noise, talking about holding
Bryce without charges until "sometime next week." This is unconstitutional
but it's the kind of thing most judges just shrug their shoulders about.

Please, please continue to make calls to the Hennepin County Adult Detention
Center at 612-348-5112, ext. 0. Please call once in the morning and once in
the afternoon. Be polite but firm. Tell them that you are calling to
express concern for Bryce's well-being and that you understand that if he is
not charged, they must release him by noon tomorrow (Wednesday). They will
act like they aren't interested in your opinion or otherwise try to make you
feel like your efforts aren't worth it. But believe me, they pay attention
to the calls they get and they move a lot faster when they know people are
watching them.

Thanks to everyone who is acting on these alerts--you've already had an
impact! Let's keep it going.
