As schools open their doors for the new academic year, thousands of after
school programs across the country are gearing up for the fourth annual
Lights On Afterschool! on Thursday, October 9, 2003. This event is the
nation's only celebration of afterschool programs.
Phillips Community Television (PCTV) an after-school program with a ten-year
history in South Minneapolis, will host an open house to commemorate this
event on Thursday Oct 9 from 5 - 7 p.m., at its studio, 2948 Chicago Avenue
(buzz the PCTV studio at the corner of Chicago and Lake.)
PCTV is a non-profit organization founded in 1993 as a response to youth and
parents who were looking for meaningful after-school projects. Participants
are from South Minneapolis and the Phillips neighborhood and come from
diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds. Each year, nearly 100 young people
participate in PCTV programs.
Phillips Community Television is the place for young people to learn all
about media production in a nurturing and fun environment. For over a
decade, PCTV has provided opportunities for youth ages 9-18 to receive
hands-on training and practical experience in learning and making media.
>From photography projects to television productions and online magazines,
young people learn that media production is not only an outlet for
self-expression but also a way of making a civic contribution to their
community.
One of PCTVs core programs is Our Turn is a lively television show produced
each month by youth who select the topic, interview participants, operate
the camera and edit the production. Past pieces have explored such diverse
topics as race, food and health, sexism, fashion, media literacy and teen
pregnancy. Our Turn airs on MTN Cable Access Channel 17 on Mondays at 7:30
p.m. and on Cable Access Channel 16 on Saturday and Sundays at 2:00 p.m.
Since PCTV was founded, youth participants have produced over 175 television
programs, 15 video screenings and discussion events and 7 photography
exhibits
Invited guests to the Lights on Afterschool! event will include family
members of participants, community members, Mayor R.T. Rybak, State Rep.
Neva Walker, and the press.
Program participants will talk about the program and show examples of their
video work.
In the face of tougher economic times and budget cuts at every level,
it is critical to bring attention to afterschool programs and the important
role they play in keeping kids safe, helping working families and improving
academic achievement, according to PVTV director John Gwinn.
Keeping the lights on during the hours after school is critical not only for
children and working families, but also for communities. Lights On
Afterschool! is a chance to shine the light on afterschool programs and call
attention to the need for more afterschool resources in America.
