I wonder if it occurred to people who stridently object to following recruitment procedures for Superintendent that the critical thing that the new incumbent will have to do is involve parents in their children's education. Now tell me how much sense it takes to hire that person by not involving African Americans who are the majority of the parents. I don't mind hiring a white guy, a white woman, an Asian (an Asian might actually be a good idea since Asians outperform Caucasians in school). But there has to be a trust level from day One, and that requires some show of respect for your parents. The other criterion I have for Superintendent is the ability to communicate to the majority that PAYS for all this, which is the taxpayers with NO children and with grown children. That also requires a trust level, which in this DFL town does not automatically dictate a former Republican political leader. I hope the board thinks a little the second time around.
These slams on the school district get old. My friend's son is a National Merit finalist at Southwest High School. Dozens of others are, too. How is it the SCHOOL DISTRICT'S failure when other people's kids don't do as well? How are the parents to know the kid won't fail at a suburban school? Could it be the parent is failing the kid and scapegoating the school? Anyway, this unthinking trash talk is boring and stupid. School failure correlates highly to poverty. The only thing schools can't control is the wealth of their client families and that is the biggest correlate to failure. Some people are poor because of being immigrants. They also don't have English fluency. Ship all the ESL kids to suburban schools and then see how they do.
Unrelated tenants
I live across from a house with unrelated tenants. I live NEXT to a house with unrelated tenants. Neither are a problem. Both are PERFECT neighbors. This ordinance, I think, is just the product of some really ancient and outmoded prejudice. I think our city would do best to get rid of it. If a house has problems, DEAL WITH THEM. Stop trying to prevent them with prejudicial laws. You think houses inhabited by married tenants don't cause problems? If so, where you been living. Not in Minneapolis I can guarantee you.
