Mr. Mork votes for a dressed up version of Topeka: "I don't want to
"grow" as a city."

What do the rest of you want? Let's vote -- it will help give
direction to City leaders. Before they can develop public policy,
they must know what the objective is. What kind of city do you want
to be?

High tax, high service for rich folks? [Boca Raton]
High tax, low service for busy folks? [Boston]
Low tax, high service for lucky folks? [Las Vegas]
Low tax, low service for independent folks? [Cody]

Twenty-five years ago, Minneapolis had an identity. Anyone could get
immediate, lucrative employment by saying "I'm from Minneapolis."
Minneapolitans were regarded as the most competent, the most honest,
the most ethical, the most hardworking people in the Country. Not
only that, it was generally thought that "the best looking women in
the world live in Minneapolis." [Once that perception faded, there
was no reason for me to stay]

True story: I was installing accounting software at one of my large
clients in Denver. The owner told his bookkeeper that he had lived in
Minneapolis for several years. He said that people there "walk around
like ice cubes for six months each year, and it's so hot and humid in
the summer you can't breathe, and the mosquitoes are as big as
airplanes." She looked perplexed and asked him "Why did you live
there so long?" After quite a pause, he replied "because the women
there are fantastic!" From that moment on, the bookkeeper treated me
like I was the Queen of Sweden.

Back to the point: Minneapolis needs to decide what it wants to be.
Only then, can you come up with policies that get you moving toward
your destination. Right now, Minneapolis is like a car with four
wheels going in different directions. No wonder you're burning fuel
and getting nowhere. Going in circles will do that.
