Got news for Tim Bonham. HHH Metrodome was built WAY before the referendum passed that established the $10 million threshold. Moreover, there's no way to circumvent the council and the law to get bonds sold to build a Minneapolis stadium. That is why the REALISTIC proposals are for state funding and building outside Minneapolis. I think finally, after the referendum and a house-cleaning in the city government, the stadium boosters GET IT, that Minneapolis taxpayers do NOT WANT TO FOOT THE BILL FOR A NEW STADIUM. And given our budget difficulties at this time, I'm stunned that anyone is even digging up this dead carcass at this time. Remember: Unlike George Bush, we CAN'T incur unlimited debt for trivial causes. For SOME reason, Moody's and S&P will downgrade city debt when there's too much. But NEVER do that for federal government bonds. So the stadium boosters have to find another tree to bark up. And don't give Rybak too much mind. Some things he says for PR purposes (don't laugh, I'm being moderate for once).
Lawsuits
What the awards prove is that we were governed for a decade by people who were both improvident and spineless. Whether they were CROOKS is a matter of individual opinion. My individual opinion is that some of the RECIPIENTS of those awards were crooks, who happened to see easy pickings and couldn't resist. But would a Republican city council have been better for Minneapolis taxpayers, with their world famous hostility to business? No, I hardly think so. That would have been foxes guarding the henhouse, whereas what we had was sleeping watchdogs.
Morale
In their fine and predictable manner, the Police Federation tried to manipulate by talking about "morale". Well, maybe we should tell them how low the morale of their EMPLOYERS gets some time. We pay a lot of money, we get law enforcement full of holes. Some of us, driving lawfully and innocently down a city street, get hit by police cars and KILLED. If the Federationists want to compare morale hits, I think we can match and exceed theirs.
