If people want to see a school board that knows how to do it RIGHT, read this story on how the Seattle School Board chose their new superintendent. The killer is that in the end, they chose the interim superintendent. But they sure surveyed the field, and I think maybe OUR board ought to consider some of the candidates that didn't make it in Seattle:

Taxes/Donations
"More than three-fourths of Minnesotans favor raising taxes on cigarettes, liquor and incomes of the wealthy to avoid state spending cuts for poor, older and disabled residents, according to a new AARP poll.
But a majority opposes increasing the gasoline tax or charging a sales tax on clothing, according to the poll, conducted last month and being made public today.
In addition, 82 percent say they would accept an increase in a range of taxes if the money went to local governments to help with fire, police and other essential services. "

Correspondent Anderson sounds a distinctly familiar note. So let me ask a couple of questions. A private foundation could have long ago built a stadium. Why have they insisted on BROWBEATING us about it if that's such an ideal solution? And, again, I hear NOTHING from certain Republicans but how the state has fallen down in letting gridlock on the road develop. Well, shucks, Mr. Anderson says just open up an account for anti-gridlock and let those who WANT to pay into it to pay for gridlock solutions! I could go on ad absurdam, but there isn't a civilized nation on the planet, let alone a town like ours, that subscribes to this simplistic theory. I fear the zealots long for the good old days of carrying a club and wearing animal skins. But I come "bearing" sad news. Those days are never to return. Best hitch our drawers and try to solve the problems in ways that are likely to happen. Even the charities have said they don't want to assume the duties that the state has been fulfilling. When the hands that are out belong to the billionaires, we say "Uh, this is a private sector matter". But when they are the hands of workers down on their luck due to business-cycle woes, we ASSUME it is a public-private partnership. At least in areas where brains still function.
Porter Confession:
Dyna:"his confession of making false charges against an officer should be more than enough probable cause to hold him in protective custody."
Is this some private fantasy; is it mind reading; is it some "news" that hasn't made it to a news source?
