Denny - I understand your point: the high-buck search and extensive public
process is not a foolproof strategy either. (Most people think the U did a
pretty good job picking a president, even though their process was
effectively closed.)

However, it seems obvious now that the elected officials at least needed to
get "buy in" from the public before cementing the deal with Jennings. Do you
feel that, at least, there needs to be some public vetting, regardless of
whether it's a nationwide search or the board acting independently?

In that vein, thanks for posting here. The brickbats are inevitable (and in
this particular case, probably deserved) but I for one am sincerely
interested in dialogue without writing the board off for all time.
