Chris Johnson writes about garbage hauling:

"My garbage is picked up by the city of Minneapolis now. It costs more
and I get far less service than when I lived in Chaska and paid a
private contractor. What's up with that?"

That one I totally don't understand.  All my friends who live in the suburbs marvel at the way City takes care of anything put on the curb - sofa, washers, etc.  In fact, I know some bring large items into the city to leave at their kids' house so that they will be removed.

I think the garbage hauling and recycling are two areas where I get good value for my tax dollar.

Now, not having an alley  - that's not a good value for me, but I am part of the whole and think if the City did not do the alleys, we would be in a real mess.  With hodge podge arrangements, (who would willingly try to get all their neighbors to agree to a plowing service, and what do you do with the one neighbor who won't pay?), I would hate to be around after the first snowfall.
