Hello Minneapolis Folks,

I read this excellent article yesterday and encourage others to do the same. They made many excellent points, including the paper marginalizing leaders of color that spoken out with a oposite opnion of the Star Tribune.

I have seen our paper cover other issues in a similar way on numerous occasions. Leaders in communities of color, African American and Native American specifically are often marginlized in this same way. Does this happen when white leaders speak out about an issue?

When Minnesota churches, synagogues, and mosques filed  a law against the state's new concealed-carry law, did the media portray the leaders in the same way? The Edina Community Lutheran Church (predominantly white) took the lead on this issue and David Lillehaug (White) was the key spokes person. I admire David Lillehaug and the work of the group, but did the media refer to them in the same derogatory way, and make efforts to minimize them?

We still have significant work to do related to racism and prejudice in our society, and many people scoff when the issue is raised. They make statements as though the problem has been solved. We have made progress on issue of racism and prejudice in this country but we surely have not solved the problem. We have made progress on treatment for cancer and aids but no one is suggesting we stop working on those very important issues, and we should not stop working on racism. Institutional racism is one of the greatest problems in our society. The media needs to review its own work to see we still have work to do on this issue.

Respectfully,

Ken Bradley
