The lights on and under the railroad bridge that passes over Monroe Street are out. This bridge is a few feet south of 18th ave NE. I am not writing to complain about budget cuts and safety and the rest. I think the new, darker intersection is better. I move through this intersection almost daily, either on foot or in my car. The lighting that previously worked produced harsh glare and shadows. Driving under the bridge in the evening now seems safer. I find it easier to see obstacles, pedestrians and bicycles. My own headlights do a better job of lighting the road than the amber sodium lights which were half-hazardly placed under the viaduct for "safety."
Walking under it is a little odd because the bridge is so wide, but the dark doesn't bother me that much. Perhaps before they repair it they could consider only lighting the sidewalk and not the road. If safety is the concern, let the safer darkness live on...

---Also in light of that tragic accident on Buchanan earlier this year (drunk driver hit viaduct support) they could turn those cool old blinking yellow lights back on, but leave the roadway dark!
