Just to set the record straight, when Robert Lilligren
originally ran for the DFL endorsement in the 8th
Ward, the delegates chose to endorse Brian Herron, the
incumbent. When Brian resigned, the SD61 DFL had a
discussion with all of the candidates who had sought
the DFL endorsement at our convention. Those who
indicated an interest in running to fill the seat
vacated by Brian agreed that bringing the delegates
together for another endorsing convention was not in
anyone's best interest.

The candidates preferred to focus their attention on
the primary election audience instead of on a much
smaller pool of delegates. The SD61 DFL party
organization agreed with that decision and instead
committed to providing 2 nonpartisan (in collaboration
with the Republican party, who also had a candidate on
the ballot) opportunities for people to meet the
various 8th ward candidates. To satisfy that
committment, the DFL and the Republicans planned and
held a Saturday candidate fair and an weeknight
candidate forum.

I don't think that in the case of the 8th ward
election, it can be effectively argued that the DFL
party unit had a hand in any institutionalized racism.
