Tamir writes:

"This created a climate where those who had mental
problems, (already unstable enough) became terrified
of law enforcement and the case could be made, that
this led Martha Donald to arm herself and thus led to
the tragic death of both of these women."

I say:

I have posted about this before. The family of Martha
Donald made it very clear on television news that they
did NOT want their mother labeled as mentally ill so I
wish people on this list would quit including her on
the list of "mentally ill victims" they speak of. Her
family admitted that she battled chemical dependency
issues. Chemical Dependency HAS NOT been defined as a
mental illness. It is a physiological disease that can
result in behaviors that may mirror mental illness but
by itself is not considered one. I think it's fair to
say Martha Donald was victim of chemical dependency
and the poor choices one makes when under the
influence of drugs or alcohol. In her case the choice
was to pull a gun and shoot a cop.

I believe it is a mistake to believe that Martha
Donald was armed because she was afraid of the police.
Martha Donald was allegedly armed because she was
upset with her niece and on her way to do harm to the
niece. The niece called the police because she feared
what Martha Donald would do to her. That is what I
remember from the story.
