Barb,

Please keep in mind that the Settlement Map is meant to be an example,
showing that it is possible to produce a ward map that (unlike the
Disputed Map) conforms to the city charter and federal law and, as much
as possible, meets a number of other criteria. The plaintiffs are not
proposing that this Settlement Map just be adopted without a new
redistricting process. Public input would be an important part of that
process and I am sure that comments and critiques, such as you have
made, would be welcome. Obviously, any map involves a great deal of
compromise. Any redistricting map is going to be far from perfect and
contains some aspects that are less than ideal. Being way up here in
upper Northeast, I am not so familiar with the specific Sixth
Ward-related concerns you are expressing, but I would urge everyone to
look at how a map more similar to the Settlement Map than the Disputed
Map would be in the overall public interest for the city as a whole.

<Subject: [Mpls] Redistricting Map - The settlement offer

<I finally got ahold of the proposed map being offered
<in the settlement of the redistricting suit. I think
<the way Zimmermann drew the sixth ward is way worse
<than it was drawn in the redistricting map that is
<currently in place. He has chopped through the middle
<of two of the regions of Phillips. The redistricting
<commission took into consideration that Phillips now
<operated "politically" as four regions and drew their
<lines at regional boundaries. Zimmermanns has no
<consideration for that.

<What's with chopping two blocks of Whittier into the
<10th ward? That is really stupid and serves no
<political purpose for those folks. I know they have
<been in 9 before. I just think that keeping the
<boundaries drawn along neighborhood boundary lines
<makes more sense and gives disenfranchised
<neighborhoods a little more political power.

<After looking at this map, I hope the law suit fails
<and the sixth ward stays the way it currently is.
