1. This nonprofit/for-profit development game is new to me, so I was very
surprised to recently hear the Minneapolis Urban League say that although it
is the NONprofit developer of the 33rd and Stinson Blvd. Holman replacement
units, the more than $1 million in public funds for this project ($250,000
or more for each public housing-type unit) would end up going to the
Minneapolis Urban League's (new?) FOR-profit subsidiary. I don't understand
this, but they said I heard correctly. Isn't this a little cagey? Guess I
just don't know how to wheel and deal.

2. Speaking of more things I don't understand and housing: I also don't
understand how Minneapolis would allow big-box retailer CVS mega-pharmacy to
demolish what appears to be a perfectly useful, affordable house near the
drug store's proposed project at 37th and Central in Minneapolis. (Granted,
this has not yet been approved by the city, but this is what CVS is
proposing -- and thus far, the neighborhood organization sans me seems OK
with it.) I would assume affordable-housing advocates would be outraged, but
then again, if you own the house, can the city stop you from tearing it
down?
