The Animal Control Facility has been in the works for almost eight years. It was on the docket when I took office ten years ago. I worked hard on this project and it kept getting pushed back until finally, after being scaled back, and after years trying to find the right location, it is being built. You need to realize this capital decision was made almost four years ago before the current budget issues. If anyone doubts they need a new building go over to their current facilities...it is a pit and not suitable for either man or beast. Because of the abysmal conditions in the building and the spread of the Parvo virus the City routinely had to destroy at least 500 dogs and cats a year. Now under the able leadership of Bob Maratto, the upcoming new building and an agreement with the Animal Humane Society, most of these animals are being adopted out and not killed. If you don't have a dog license get one. It is the best $20 worth of yearly insurance you can buy. I have Huskies and they like to run. At least once a year somebody takes my dogs home and they are returned to me because the Animal Control Facility makes sure they come back. This new building isn't pork barrel spending in any way. I salute the wonderful work, and devotion, of the Animal Control folks. They have always been welcoming when I showed up with abandoned and abused furry creatures. And the pound was ALWAYS clean and fresh smelling.
I just happened to notice a, grand, new building being built for them at a location near West Bro. and Washington Ave. North.
We do welcome their devotion to strays; and recognize that even in tough budget times the City has plenty money, or borrowing power, to keep building trades union members busy; and off the streets.
