<< Eric Oines North Minneapolis Lind-Bohanon - where they tore down all our convenience stores - and our drug store - and our gas stations - and the barber shop - so real estate agents could make lots of money. >> Keith says; The demolition juggernaut you reference, and mourn, is one tiny component of the broader DFL Affordable Housing Demolition Juggernaut. The one that more or less ended with the defeat of the Cherryhomes/Belton/Campbell Troika. It began much earlier, of course. That campaign sent older housing to the dump, families to the shelter, and minority education potential down the toilet. Those kids on all the street corners of the hood can't read. They are Sharon and Jackie's Kids. It was not done to make real estate agents rich. It did promote new construction jobs. And if you are referring to the Humboldt Greenway; it allowed pools of broader government money to be spent on development and road building. Soon we may have a "new" Lowry Avenue, narrowed to one traffic lane in each direction. Gussied up with bike lanes, literally up one side and down the other, instead of parking. It may end up with the capacity of the Humboldt Greenway, and less parking. it's success may be measured by how many City, County, Metropolitan Council, Federal, etc., dollars are funneled in and through. Pools of money with misc. labels like Bus Rapid Transit $$$ will be hustled into the mix; and of course drained away from neighboring West Broadway. Wrong Avenue, wrong design, hijacked dollars, housing and commercial demolition; a project that widens the street yet plans to, net, reduce traffic lanes. The new BRT stations will look just lovely; so what? Lowry Avenue, curb to curb, is just dandy, right now. Why is a gazillion dollars set to be spent to rejigger it? Is this social engineering, fueled through roadway expenditure, that will not benefit traffic mobility? Well, of course. Keith Reitman Property Owner/stakeholder Lowry/Lyndale REMINDERS: 1.
