I wasn't aware that this type of regulation had been put in place. I know it sounds a bit crazy and paranoid to think that convenience stores can be bastions of crime. I have done the work to show they can be. At least they were when I was dealing with "crack alley" in Whittier. Back then cell phones were not as prevalent and many of the convenience stores had pay phones on their stores. Those caused miserable problems for us. So much so that our block club worked five months to get the one on the store by me taken down. We worked through the "system" which included attending a meeting with the licensing inspector and director. My neighbor and I even testified at the Public Utilities Commission about the problem.
After five months of not being able to do anything about it, "some" volunteers in our block club put two part epoxy in the coin slot. It took much less time to get rid of the phone using that method. About a month of the phone company having to replace the gummed up phones every week they got the message. No more phone on the store. I would rather see the city put a spacing requirement between convenience stores rather than regulating what they can and cannot sell. (Except of course for selling beer and cigarettes to minors, allowing those with EBT cards or WIC coupons to use them for beer and cigarettes, drug paraphernalia and stolen goods) I would like to see the current store owners be healthy from selling legal products rather than having to resort to illegal means to make a buck. I think a spacing requirement limiting the number of convenience stores in any particular area would be good. It would certainly help in my neighborhood. Barb Lickness Whittier p.s.
