Yup, they're ugly. Businesses who don't want guns shouldn't have to post signs saying so. Someone had a great idea a while back -- how about requiring businesses to post signs if they welcome guns? Signs would have to be extremely large and include a big smiley face. I think everyone would love that. I'm surprised at Dean's comment that no sign will keep those upstanding, law-abiding permit holders from bringing their guns in. Really? The ones I've talked to always say they honor those signs. Are you saying that permit holders don't respect other people's property rights? I don't believe it. (And no, the signs have no effect on criminal behavior one way or the other.) As I've said before, I'm a lot happier seeing an ugly sign than I am sitting for hours in a theatre wondering if somebody next to me is going to drop his gun. Moviegoers and restaurant diners in other states have been wounded in accidental shootings. (See incidents at www.bradycampaign.org/facts/incident.asp) Here in Minnesota, a woman was shot in a Mankato restaurant a couple of years ago when a permit holder dropped his gun (she testified about it for the legislature). This past weekend in St. Paul, a 21-year-old security guard and handgun permit holder tried to prevent property theft and ended up allegedly shooting somebody by accident. Next time I'm sitting in a restaurant by him, I'll be sure to make no false moves. Better yet, I'll go to a restaurant where guns aren't allowed. It will be a lot more enjoyable.
